Volunteer Opportunities in the MMWD Watershed

September Events

Trail Crew / Project Restore, Azalea Meadow Trail
Saturday, September 11, 2010, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Please join MMWD to improve and re-route sections of Azalea Meadow Trail. Explicit trail connections and signage help mark official trails and minimize the likelihood of people getting lost. A district vehicle will shuttle volunteers to the work site. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Lagunitas Picnic Area parking lot, located at the end of Sky Oaks Road, off Bolinas Road in Fairfax.

In addition to providing recreation, trails foster an appreciation and respect of nature. Please help MMWD maintain trail integrity by improving the tread and erosion control measures on Pumpkin Ridge Trail. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Lagunitas Picnic Area parking lot, located at the end of Sky Oaks Road, off Bolinas Road in Fairfax.

Habitat Restoration / Gateway Project, Lagunitas Creek
Saturday, October 16, 2010, 9 a.m. to Noon

Improve habitat for salmon by planting native vegetation along Lagunitas Creek, home to many local birds and animals including kingfishers, merganser ducks and giant pacific salamanders. This event is part of the "Gateway" project, which is funded by the State Coastal Conservancy and the California Resources Agency's River Parkways program.

We will meet at the Leo T. Cronin Fish Viewing area parking lot located at Shafter Bridge on Sir Francis Drake Blvd., near the confluence of San Geronimo Creek and Lagunitas Creek in West Marin, just before Samuel P. Taylor State Park.

Watershed Work Week at Green Gulch Farm Zen Center (Muir Beach)

September 12 – 17, from Sunday 6 pm (dinner) until Friday noon (lunch)

Green Gulch Farm Zen Center invites you to join the community for its Watershed Work Week and work on watershed and land restoration projects.

You would be guests of the Center while you help care for the 115-acre valley with an eye to preserving and increasing its native habitats, preventing erosion, caring for the Salmonid creek, and maintaining and creating local Green Gulch trails. Work tends to be physical. Skills in construction, repairs, and landscaping are helpful.

This is an opportunity to stay at Green Gulch Farm and join the residential community. Come and enjoy time working, meditating, eating, and talking together.

Public Policy Expert to Address League of Women Voters at Fall Kickoff Meeting, Thursday, September 16, 5:00 - 7:00 pm

The League of Women Voters of Marin County kicks off its “new year” Thursday, September 16, at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross, featuring nationally recognized public policy expert and author Fred Silva speaking on governance and fiscal issues raised by a number of upcoming November ballot measures.

Mr. Silva is the senior fiscal policy adviser for California Forward, a bipartisan group of public policy experts and business, community, and civic leaders funded by major California foundations.  Having spent 40 years in developing public policy in state and local governments, he is an expert in their financing, operations, and fiscal relationships.

The League also will present its “Bunny Lucheta Memorial Award”, honoring outstanding public service to the Marin community, to Michael Smith, who is retiring this year as the county’s Treasurer/Tax Collector/County Clerk/Public Administrator.  He has also served as the Registrar of Voters.

Bay Friendly Landscape Conference, September 17, 8 am - 5 pm, St. Mary's Event Center

This year, the annual Bay Friendly Landscape Conference is focused on water, "Transforming Urban Landscapes to Protect our Water Resources". Conference attendees will have an opportunity to interact with keynote speaker and water reuse guru Brad Lancaster, author of Rainharvesting for Drylands and Beyond.  The rest of the event is filled with excellent panels and workshops that will help you implement specific best practices related to landscape and water use.  Those registering before September 1st qualify for a chance to win a free controller.

Community Workshop - The Future of the Mt. Tamalpais Watershed, Wednesday, September 22, 6:30 - 9:00 pm

Come join fellow Marin residents, conservationists, and Mt. Tamalpais enthusiasts to discuss the future of the Mt. Tamalpais watershed and to help chart a course for this invaluable community asset. The Marin Municipal Water District is hosting three workshops this fall to work with the community to identify priorities for the watershed in the coming years, to explore options for enhanced stewardship, and to discuss the creation of a citizen-based organization to oversee this endeavor.

The first workshop will be held on Wednesday, September 22 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Bacich Elementary School in Kentfield, 699 Sir Francis Drake Blvd..

Tam Valley Speaker Series, ENDANGERED SPECIES:  CALIFORNIA FISH AND GAME WARDENS, Wednesday, September 29, 7:00-8:30 pm

Speaker:  James Swan, PhD. Co-Executive Producer-"Wild Justice" TV series
for National Geographic, and Producer/Owner of Snow Goose Productions.

This is a feature-length documentary film on the California game warden crisis, narrated by actor/author Jameson Parker ("Simon and Simon").  It is the result of a two year journey in which James and Andrew Swan traveled the state riding along with over 50 game wardens in airplanes, helicopters, snowmobiles, boats, and patrol vehicles.  Special segments include a bust of a 20,000 plant marijuana grove; a shootout in a marijuana grove; takedowns for abalone, caviar and bear poaching; and a warden's discovery of a terrorist cell.

BayWood Artists'annual show to benefit open space, Oct. 22 - Nov. 20 at the Bay Model

BayWood Artists' annual show will benefit the Marin Open Space District and the Marin Open Space Trust.  The artists are professional "pleine aire" painters dedicated to environmental preservation.  BayWood Artists past shows have benefited many local organizations including MCL. Their beautiful paintings have helped promote the need to protect our natural surroundings..

This year's show will open with a reception on Friday evening October 22 and run until November 20 at the Bay Model in Sausalito.  It will include paintings of the spectacular lands on Tiburon Ridge threatened with development and other familiar Marin open spaces. Mark your calendar!
