8901 Redwood Highway 101
Novato, CA 94945

Celebrate history, culture, and nature at Olompali's 27th annual Heritage Day.

Sponsored in partnership by The Olompali People and California State Parks, Heritage Day offers a wide range of activities. Visitors can take guided walks to lean about Olompali’s birds, plants, and archaeology. They also can hear experts relate the history of the Camilo Ynitia Adobe and the Burdell Mansion, as well as the planned renovation of the historic Burdell Victorian Garden.

Throughout the day there will be family-oriented interactive demonstrations of crafts like basketry, flint-knapping, clam disc bead making, adobe brick making, and blacksmithing.

A silent auction will be held to raise funds for the park, with auction items donated by Marin and Sonoma County merchants and artisans. And, as in past years, there will be free ice cream courtesy of Clover Stornetta. Call 707-762-9715 for more information.

Habitat Restoration - Goatgrass on Azalea Hill
Saturday, May 19
9 am to noon

Come save serpentine rare plants from goats! Well, from goatgrass, an invasive annual grass and one of the few weeds that can grow in serpentine grasslands. Get introduced to our rare species in the morning and then restore their habitat.

Centennial Hike - Grasses of the Mountaintop
Wednesday, May 30
10 am to 4 pm

Explore Marin's grasslands with local expert Ashley Ratcliffe on a "botany-speed hike" from Rock Spring to Potrero Meadow. Learn basic grass identification and the importance of grasslands to the ecology of the mountain. Bring lunch and a loupe/small magnifying glass. Meet at 10 a.m. at Rock Spring parking lot.

For MMWD volunteer programs, please wear close-toed shoes and long pants, dress for variable weather and bring a reusable water bottle. We will provide breakfast snacks, water, tools, parking passes and inspiration! Trail events are generally suitable for ages 13 and up, and habitat restoration events for ages 8 and up. Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, and all volunteers under age 18 must bring a permission form signed by a parent or guardian. Save Springs Hill - Terra Linda/Sleepy Hollow Preserve
Saturday, May 12
9am – 2pm

Supervisor Susan Adams and natural resources staff host a community meeting about the Terra Linda/Sleepy Hollow Goatgrass Removal Project. Staff will provide an update, share the results of our management efforts, and explain future plans to address this pest. Following the meeting, community members are invited to help us pull goatgrass. The work will occur on moderate to steep slopes.

Directions:  Meet at Wintergreen Terrace in Terra Linda: from Hwy 101, take the Freitas Pkwy/Terra Linda exit west, turn right at Las Pavadas Ave (veers left and becomes Las Colindas Rd), and turn right at Wintergreen Terrace. Gate is at the end of Wintergreen Terrace.

Paradise Beach Park Broom Pull
Sunday, May 20
10am – 12pm
Paradise Beach Park, 3450 Paradise Dr, Tiburon

Situated on the northern side of the Tiburon Peninsula, Paradise Beach Park offers attractive picnic areas and beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay and beyond. We will remove French broom and other invasive species from the upper shoreline, and several oak woodland areas of the park. The work will occur on gentle to moderate slopes. Parking fee waived for volunteers.

Restore Ring Mountain
Saturday, May 26
9am – 1pm

Come to Ring Mountain to help restore habitat, listen to interpretive talks, and find out what’s in store for the future of this incredible preserve! Protect the endangered Tiburon Mariposa Lily by finding and removing invasive yellow and tocolote star thistles. These invasive plants were once a thriving population on the rise, but this annual removal effort is yielding positive results. We have not found yellow star thistle in several years and tocolote star thistle is now on the decline. Join us to become part of this habitat restoration success story. This is a light, moderately strenuous activity and is suitable for volunteers of all ages.

Directions: Meet at Taylor Rd in Corte Madera: from Hwy 101, take the Tamalpais Dr exit and head east, turn right on San Clemente Dr, which turns into Paradise Dr. Follow Paradise Dr for 1.5 miles and turn right on Taylor Rd. The entrance gate is on the right.

Heavy rains, high winds, and/or high fire danger may cancel volunteer events. To find out if an event is canceled, call (415) 507-2823 after 7am on the morning of the event to listen to a recorded message.
